He pastored several churches and frequently engaged in missionary service. After graduation, he entered the seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. His maturity and confidence made him a great leader, and it was common consent that he was the head of the chapter. He was born near Frederickstown, Ohio, and later became the first consul of the Alpha Chapter at Miami University. In addition, he served as editor and publisher of a local newspaper from 1878–1885. He became the superintendent of a public-school district and continued on to become the president of two colleges. Following the conclusion of the Civil War, Bell continued his ambitions in the academic world. After graduation, he joined the Union Army in 1862 and later attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was born near Dayton, Ohio and was an 1857 graduate of Miami of Ohio.
